INTRODUCTION Mucormycosis (previously called, Zygomycosis) is a known type of an aggressive fungal infection. Recently, it has become increasingly more common with an unacceptably high mortality despite firstline antifungal therapy. Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM), consisting of involvement of sinuses with or without brain/orbits, has accounted for up to half of all cases of mucormycosis.1 With a recent change in the epidemiological trend of the invasive fungal infection, as well as an advance in the knowledge of the pathogenesis of the infection, we aimed to summarize and update the recent knowledge of mucormycosis, focusing on the rhino-orbital-cerebral involvement and the management strategy which potentially improves the treatment outcome of this infection.

Background: This study was done to determine presenting features and treatment out-come of Rhino-Orbital-Cerebral Mucormycosis (ROCM). Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted during 14 years (from 1998-2012) in two educational hospitals of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in patients with rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis. Clinical symptoms, predisposing factors, demografic p...
متن کاملA case of rhino-orbital mucormycosis in diabetes with haematogenous cerebral spread
We document the first case of haematogenous cerebral spread in Rhizopus arrhizus rhino-orbital mucormycosis, and of posaconazole related adrenal insufficiency. A patient presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis and sinusitis was treated with right medial maxillectomy, ethmoidectomy and IV liposomal amphotericin. Orbital exenteration was performed after intraorbital spread of infection. IV caspofun...
متن کاملEndoscopic sinus surgery in the management of mucormycosis.
This is a report of the use of endoscopic sinus surgery in the management of three patients diagnosed with rhino-orbital or rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis. A retrospective review was performed of the clinical examinations and imaging studies of three patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery as part of their therapy for mucormycosis. In addition to endoscopic surgery, all patients had...
متن کاملUnilateral rhino–orbital–cerebral mucormycosis with contralateral endogenous fungal endophthalmitis
Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is an uncommon but fatal fungal infection. We report a rare case of unilateral ROCM with ipsilateral central retinal artery occlusion and contralateral choroiditis, which later progressed to endogenous fungal endophthalmitis. The patient was successfully treated with sinuses debridement, systemic liposomal amphotericin B, and intravitreal amphotericin ...
متن کامل(18)F-FDG PET/CT contribution to diagnosis and treatment response of rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis.
OBJECTIVE Mucormycosis is an infection caused by mycetes mucorales, emerged as a life-threatening infection associated with severe morbidity and high mortality. Conventional imaging such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are usually performed to assess mucormycosis extension, but they may present insufficiencies in their performance. CASE PRESENTATION We present...
